Understanding BIT: It’s More Than Just a Check-Up

A mechanic in blue overalls uses a wrench to work on the open engine compartment of a red commercial truck.

If you operate a commercial truck or manage a fleet in California, you’ve likely heard the term “BIT inspection.” But what exactly is it—and why is it so important?

The BIT (Basic Inspection of Terminals) program is a safety initiative enforced by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). It’s designed to ensure that commercial vehicles operating in the state are properly maintained, safe to drive, and compliant with all transportation regulations.

Who Needs a BIT Inspection?

In general, you’re required to undergo BIT inspections if you operate any of the following:

  • Trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) over 10,000 lbs

  • Trailers used in commercial transport

  • Vehicles carrying hazardous materials

  • Passenger vehicles designed to carry 10+ people, including the driver

If you’re unsure whether your truck or fleet qualifies, CCTR can help you figure it out—before the CHP does.

How Often Are Inspections Required?

CHP inspections are typically required every 90 days, annually, or as scheduled by your compliance plan. Missing an inspection can lead to citations, downtime, and even costly impounds.

At CCTR, we help fleet managers set up a reliable inspection schedule so you stay ahead of the curve and on the road.

What’s Included in a BIT Inspection?

A BIT inspection is a deep dive into your vehicle’s safety and roadworthiness. Here’s what our certified inspectors evaluate:

  • Brakes and brake connection

  • Steering and suspension systems

  • Tires, wheels, and rims

  • Lights and electrical components

  • Fuel systems and exhaust

  • Frame and chassis integrity

  • Emergency exits (for applicable vehicles)

  • Required documentation & recordkeeping

When you choose CCTR, we not only check these components—we also provide a clear report so you know exactly where your fleet stands

Why Choose a Mobile BIT Inspection?

We get it. Hauling your fleet to a shop eats up time and productivity. That’s why CCTR offers on-site mobile BIT inspections throughout San Diego County. Whether you manage 3 trucks or 30, we’ll come to your terminal or yard and perform the inspection on your schedule.

  • Save time
